Flying Start is the South Australian Government’s initiative to introduce preschool for three-year-old children across the state. This major initiative is being progressively rolled out, with more children gaining access to funded preschool each year.

At what age does a child start school in Adelaide?
In South Australia, the first year of primary school is called Reception. Children can start in the year they turn 5, with two intake points depending on their birthday. Children born before May 1 normally start at the beginning of the year, while children born between May 1 and October 31 can start in Term 3. Children born on or after November 1 usually begin in Term 1 the following year.
