Starting school is a significant milestone – one that brings a mix of excitement, curiosity and, at times, uncertainty. At Guardian, we see school readiness not as a checklist of academic skills, but as a broader journey; one that supports children to feel confident and capable for what comes next.
Our two-year Flying Start to School preschool / kindergarten program marks the final stages of our To BE Me learning program, bringing together children’s early experiences into a thoughtful, connected pathway toward school.
A two-year approach that makes a difference
We know that meaningful development takes time. That’s why Flying Start to School is designed across two years.
In the first year, children focus on building strong foundations – developing confidence, communication skills and independence through play-based learning. They form friendships, express their ideas and build a sense of themselves as learners.
In the second year, that learning deepens. Children are supported to think more critically, collaborate with others and take greater ownership of their learning. They’re encouraged to ask questions, solve problems and build resilience; skills that will support them well beyond their first year of school.
Looking beyond academics
While early literacy and numeracy are part of the program, they’re not the sole focus, and for good reason.
Social and emotional development plays a critical role in how children experience school. Confidence, independence, communication and emotional awareness all shape how children engage in the classroom, build relationships and respond to new challenges.
Through a balance of play-based and intentional teaching, children develop these capabilities in ways that feel meaningful and engaging.
Learning that feels connected
In our inspiring preschool / kinder spaces, learning is designed to feel relevant and real. Whether through group projects, creative experiences or everyday routines, children are encouraged to explore ideas, work together and contribute to their environment.
Early literacy and numeracy concepts are introduced through play and inquiry, helping children build understanding without pressure.
Just as importantly, children learn how to listen, take turns, share perspectives and participate in group experiences, skills that underpin a positive start to school life.
Building a sense of belonging
A strong sense of belonging sits at the heart of school readiness.
Through To BE Me, children build relationships with peers and educators, develop empathy and begin to understand their place within a community. These experiences help children step into school environments feeling secure, connected and ready to engage.
Making the transition feel familiar
For many children, the transition to school is made easier when it feels familiar.
Within Flying Start to School, children are gradually introduced to school-like experiences – engaging in group discussions, following routines and building independence in everyday tasks. Where possible, connections with local schools help children gain confidence in new environments.
A confident step forward
By the end of the program, children leave with more than foundational skills. They leave with a sense of who they are as learners – curious, capable and ready to participate.
Because ultimately, a strong start to school isn’t just about what children know. It’s about how they feel as they walk through the gate on that first day, and the confidence they carry with them long after.
