At Guardian, the safety and wellbeing of children is at the heart of everything we do
Child Protection Week is an important opportunity to reflect on how we can all help create environments where children feel safe, respected, and empowered.
This year’s theme underlines the importance of connecting and hearing what children are saying: “Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action”
It’s a powerful reminder that listening is just the beginning. When children communicate something to us – through their words, actions, play or behaviour – it’s our responsibility as adults to listen carefully, take them seriously and respond in ways that support their safety and wellbeing.
Every conversation matters – and listening leads to action
Children communicate in many different ways. They may use words to tell us how they feel, express themselves through play, show us through their behaviour when something isn’t right, or communicate through silence.
Our educators and teams are trained to recognise and respond to children’s communication, including changes in behaviour and signs that a child may need additional support. By creating trusting relationships and taking the time to listen, we enable children to feel confident that their voice matters.
Most importantly, when a child raises a concern, we have a responsibility to respond appropriately and take action to keep them safe.
How do we help keep children safe at Guardian?
Children should never be responsible for keeping themselves safe. That responsibility sits with the adults and organisations around them.
At Guardian, child safety is embedded in the way we work every day. Our teams follow strict child-safe practices designed to create environments where children can learn, play and build relationships safely.
This includes creating safe and inclusive learning environments, maintaining appropriate supervision, carefully managing visitors and access to our centres, supporting positive and respectful interactions, and ensuring our teams understand their responsibilities when it comes to child safety and protection.
We also recognise that creating safe environments is an ongoing process. We continually reflect on our practices and look for ways to strengthen the ways we support children.
Every child deserves to feel seen and heard
Child protection is about more than responding when something goes wrong. It’s about creating everyday experiences where children feel respected and confident to express themselves.
Our educators build strong, trusting relationships with children and create environments where children can be themselves, ask questions, share their feelings and know that the adults around them will listen.
When children feel safe and secure, they are better supported to develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of belonging.
Children’s voices matter
Children have the right to have a say in matters that affect them, in ways that are appropriate for their age, development and individual needs.
At Guardian, our educators provide children with opportunities to express their ideas, preferences and feelings and to contribute to decisions about their day. This might happen through play, conversations, group experiences or one-on-one interactions.
Giving children a voice isn’t simply about asking what they think. It’s about genuinely listening to what they tell us, taking their views seriously and helping them understand that their voice can make a difference.
Creating a culture of child safety
A child-safe environment is one where children know they will be listened to, respected and supported.
That means continually asking ourselves important questions: Do children feel comfortable speaking up? Do they know who they can turn to if something doesn’t feel right? Are their views being heard and taken seriously? Are our environments and practices supporting their safety, inclusion and wellbeing?
This Child Protection Week, let’s remember that every conversation matters. Because when we listen, respond and take action, we can make a meaningful difference in children’s lives.
