To BE Me: Supporting Babies Through Play-Based Early Learning

Babies learn from birth

The first two years of a child’s life are filled with incredible growth. From first smiles and first steps; first friendships and first words, babies are constantly learning about themselves and the world around them. At Guardian Childcare, we believe these early moments deserve thoughtful, personalised early learning designed around each child’s unique stage of development.

That’s why our unique To BE Me learning program is tailored to support children through every age and stage of their early years. For babies aged 0–2, the first two stages of the program, ‘You and ME’ and ‘Knowing ME’, create a strong foundation for confidence and lifelong learning.

You and ME (0–1 years): Building Trust, Security and Connection

In the first year of life, we know that babies learn best when they feel secure and cared for. The ‘You and ME’ stage of To BE Me is designed around exactly that: nurturing trusting relationships and creating calm, responsive environments where babies can thrive.

Across our Guardian early learning centres, our passionate Nursery educators take time to understand each baby’s individual routines, cues and preferences. From feeding and sleep to play and comfort, every interaction is guided by responsive care and genuine connection.

During this stage, babies are developing those all-important foundational skills across every area of learning, including:

  • forming secure attachments with trusted adults like our qualified educators
  • developing communication through sounds, gestures and facial expressions
  • exploring movement and sensory experiences
  • building confidence in familiar routines and environments

Our Nursery spaces are thoughtfully designed to feel like a “home away from home”, with calming environments, soft furnishings and age-appropriate resources that support babies’ development.

Importantly, we also work closely with families throughout this stage. Ongoing communication helps create consistency between home and childcare, supporting babies to feel secure and connected throughout their day.

Knowing ME (1–2 years): Encouraging Independence and Exploration

As babies grow into confident young toddlers, their world expands quickly. The ‘Knowing ME’ stage supports children aged 1–2 as they begin exploring more independently, building social confidence and discovering how they interact with people, spaces and objects around them.

At this age, children are naturally curious. They want to move, climb, investigate, experiment and communicate. Our early learning educators create safe, engaging environments that encourage this exploration while supporting each child’s emotional wellbeing.

Through play-based learning experiences, children are supported to:

  • develop physical confidence and coordination
  • build language and communication skills
  • begin forming friendships and social connections
  • explore problem-solving and independence
  • gain confidence making choices and expressing preferences

Guardian early learning centres provide opportunities for children to move between inspiring indoor and outdoor learning spaces, helping them engage with their peers and discover new interests through play.

This stage is also an important time for developing emotional awareness. Educators guide children through early social experiences with warmth and care, helping them build trust, resilience and a growing sense of self.

A Personalised Approach to Early Learning

What makes To BE Me different is its personalised approach to learning and development. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all curriculum, To BE Me recognises that every child develops differently and deserves support tailored to their age, strengths and interests.

Across both ‘You and ME’ and ‘Knowing ME’, learning is guided by seven key developmental areas that help families clearly see their child’s progress and growth over time. This makes learning meaningful, visible to families, and is connected to each child’s unique journey.

At Guardian, we know choosing the right childcare for your baby is one of the biggest decisions families make. Our specialist Nursery teams, nurturing environments and tailored learning programs are designed to give children the very best start in life; supporting not only their development today, but their confidence and love of learning for years to come.
