Cooking and kitchen hand jobs in childcare

The cooking and kitchen team are essential in any Guardian Childcare Centre. They’ll be busy preparing meals for all the little smiling faces, and they’ll get to know who likes what and who has special dietary requirements. Our kitchen teams are three different positions: Chef, Cooks, and Kitchen Hands.

What is a childcare Chef?

A Childcare Chef will work with the Centre Manager to plan and prepare a meal plan for the children. The meal plan must accommodate all dietary requirements (gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.) and allergies.

At Guardian Childcare, our Chefs and other Cooks and Kitchen Hands will organise and run the kitchen.

What are the duties of a school cook?

Childcare cooks will work with other Chefs and Cooks to plan and prepare meals for children. A Cook may have fewer qualifications than a Chef, but they may have similar responsibilities and duties.

What is a childcare kitchen hand?

A Kitchen Hand will be responsible for serving prepared meals and ensuring food safety standards are completed to a high level. Kitchen Hands will work closely with Chefs and Cooks and complete tasks as directed.

How can I get a job as a childcare Cook?

At Guardian, we are looking for Chefs, Cooks, and Kitchen Hands to work in our centres and prepare nutritious meals for our children. The food you prepare will help the children learn about food as they discover new textures and flavours. In addition to your meal preparation and planning duties, you’ll have the opportunity to educate children as they forage in the vegetable gardens planted at our centres.

To be considered for a position in the kitchen at Guardian Childcare, you’ll need the following:

  • A food safety supervisor certificate
  • An awareness of your responsibilities under current Child Protection Laws
  • A Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (or currently studying)
  • A current Working with Children Check issued in the state you are applying.
