As families well know, looking after a baby means becoming pretty preoccupied with sleep…and that’s not just the sleep we’re losing. We all want to help our little ones to sleep soundly and, most importantly, safely.

4-10 March 2024 is Safe Sleep Week. Every year, Red Nose Australia provides awareness and support to help promote safer sleep for infants and families. This essential information helps to save little lives.

Red Nose Australia has a wealth of online resources, support and guidance. If you’re a new family or if you’re revisiting a current bedtime routine, there’ll be something relevant for you and your little one. This week, there’s lots of free online events they are hosting around safe sleeping.

Some tips for safe sleep:

  • The safest place for a baby to sleep is in their own space, in the same room as their adult caregiver for the first 6-12 months
  • Babies should sleep flat on their back, with their face and head uncovered
  • Dress your baby for sleep to suit the temperature of the room – not too hot, not too cold – comfortably warm
  • Ensure your baby is positioned with their feet at the bottom of the cot, and any sheets are tucked in tightly to avoid them wriggling down

Families at our Centres can reach out to their Baby Ambassador to further discuss this. If you haven’t had a chat with your Baby Ambassador yet, now is the ideal time. A highly-skilled and experienced nursery educator, your Baby Ambassador is the perfect person to fill you in on what safe sleep looks like at your Centre and at home.
