Megan, Centre Manager for Blackburn Village

Tell us about your time working in early childcare and education so far and what inspires you each day?

I have always had a passion for working with children, having started at the age of 14. Back in South Africa, I used to help out at the family day care where my cousins went.

I started working in the early education and care setting in 2005 as an assistant after school and have since moved through the positions of Room Leader, Educational Leader, 2IC and now Centre Manager at Blackburn Village. The most rewarding part of being an early childhood professional is building and maintaining relationships with the children and their families and being able to see the children grow into confident kinder graduates.

What have you learnt about children during your early childcare and education career and how would you sum up your approach/passion to helping them on their learning, emotional, social and life journey?

I believe in a holistic approach to children’s learning. Providing safe, secure and welcoming environments with familiar Educators and peers encourages children to express their multiple ways of thinking, playing, exploring, speaking and doing. I believe that children are capable and confident and that we need to provide children with the opportunities, skills and support to become life-long learners.

What are you most excited about working with children on/teaching children about and why?

Children are amazing, exciting and full of wonder. They surprise me each and every day through the conversations they have with me to the new things they discover. I feel that having a strong relationship with each child and family is important. It allows them to be confident and comfortable with me, trusting me in their home away from home.
