In Conversation with Jes Barrett Centre Manager of Mentone
Jes Barrett is the Centre Manager for Mentone, a light-filled centre which features a recently refurbished outdoor space, a climbing forte, vegetable gardens, and a pet rabbit. Jes took a few minutes out of her busy day to share insights on her career background, her education approach and a few fun facts.
Tell us about your time working in early childcare and education so far and what inspires you each day?
I started my career in the Northern Territory where I worked for two and a half years, predominantly with babies and toddlers. I then moved home to Victoria and started work with Guardian in February, 2011. I started as an Assistant Educator at East Ivanhoe and became Centre Manager in 2014. In 2015, I took on the Centre Manager’s role at Tiggers before moving out to Mentone in 2017.
The best part of my role is having the ability to go between both the office and the rooms. Being able to put a family’s mind at ease when their children begin their journey into education is very important to me. I’m also passionate about teaching mentoring and guiding Educators in their practice. I have the privilege of watching children grow, learn and discover on their journey through the early years, which is a true honour.
What have you learnt about children during your early childcare and education career and how would you sum up your approach/passion to helping them on their learning, emotional, social and life journey?
I believe that each child is unique in their learning and they should be provided with open ended opportunities to gather information, explore, take risks and build their confidence during their time with us. By providing children with beautiful play spaces where they can freely follow their interests and develop their skill sets, we are encouraging them to be capable and confident learners.
