Jennifer Scheepers, Centre Manager for Lane Cove

Tell us about your time working in early childcare and education so far and what inspires you each day?

I began my career in early childhood to experience a new profession, and started as a trainee at our Walker Street service in North Sydney. Within this service I worked with an amazing team whilst I studied my Certificate 3 and Diploma. I then travelled and worked in Italy and France. Upon my return, I worked at Arthur Street in North Sydney.

Throughout my years of growing as an Educator, I have learned how to be adaptable and resilient and have found that my true passion lies within team culture. As Centre Manager of Lane Cove, I work hard to ensure that the best quality of care can be provided to the young minds we care for each day. What most inspires me each day is how children see our world with an untainted perception of life. They love unconditionally, they trust wholeheartedly and appreciating the simplest things life has to offer.

What have you learnt about children during your early childcare and education career and how would you sum up your approach/passion to helping them on their learning, emotional, social and life journey?

I believe children are capable and involved learners; they take on board their learning and direct it in a way they see fit to further explore their theories and understandings. Children’s minds are fascinating to me. How they see the world around them is so different to adults who have restrictions and influences dictating their view of their world, whereas children are free from this.

When my whole team is happy, it allows for us to build an environment where a sense of security can be established for our young minds to theorise and explore their way of thinking. By offering encouragement and reassurance, the children can take their thinking further.

What are you most excited about working with children on/teaching children about and why?

I enjoy being able to instil confidence and a sense of security into each child. Nothing brings me more joy than to see a child branch out and try something new, to show that they have begun to establish their sense of security within our service. Building relationships with the children and families at Lane Cove is so important to me because as a naturally introverted individual, I can sympathise when you are entering a new environment for the first time. Imagine being a child and entering a new service for the first time – it can be quite intimidating. So to be able to offer a safe space for children brings me the most joy.
