Brendan, Centre Manager of River Garden

Tell us about your time working in early childcare and education so far and what inspires you each day?

I began my career in the education sector around 17 years ago. I started out as a Maths and Science teacher in a secondary school environment. I fell into the job after completing my university degree and, as they say, the rest is history. I spent five years in the government sector and the past 12 in the independent sector. In that time, I have had a variety of roles, with my most recent being the Deputy Head of Campus in charge of staffing and professional coaching. I have learnt so much in my time in the education sector. No two days are exactly the same and that is what I look forward to most. Building positive relationships with stakeholders across any organisation is key to getting the most out of each day.

What have you learnt about children during your early childcare and education career and how would you sum up your approach/passion to helping them on their learning, emotional, social and life journey?

I have learnt so much from children throughout my education career. Each child is an individual and there is not one model that fits all. We encourage children to build on their own interests and strengths through scaffolding, mentoring and facilitating their learning and development through modelling of their Educators. I believe that River Garden truly captivates this and we ignite the endless possibilities of learning by embracing challenges and rejoicing in accomplishments through our various spaces, open-ended resources and our vibrant atmosphere.

What are you most excited about working with children on/teaching children about and why?

I love watching the growth and development of the children, observing their progress, observing their success. It’s the little wins that catapult into something larger. When I was a Maths teacher, watching children understand concepts they previously hadn’t was always exciting. The hard work, grit and determination is so rewarding.
