Book Week would have to be one of our favourite events of the year at Guardian Childcare & Education. Not only because we love reading, but the week allows Educators and children to embrace their creative side and let their imaginations run wild.

Here’s a snapshot of how some of our centres celebrated Book Week this August:

Guardian Early Learning Centre – Charlotte Street

Guardian Early Learning Centre – Charlotte Street explored Picture Book of the Year, Cicada by Shaun Tan. After reading the book, the children shared their thoughts on the story, characters and images, which were then documented and displayed in the centre’s reading space.

Each time we read a book, we take time when the story is finished to reflect on what we saw, what we felt, and what we believe the author wanted us to feel,” shares Lead Educator, Stephanie.

Guardian Early Learning – Springfield

Inspired by Book Week, the children at Guardian Early Learning – Springfield hid books throughout the Robelle Domain as an alternative to the rock hide and seek game they participate in with the community.

“The children wanted to share books with everyone, so they attached notes to each book before leaving the centre. They searched for the perfect hiding place in hopes that other children would find the books and share a story together,” says Educator, Amanda.

Kids Time Bentleigh East

Kids Time – Bentleigh East put on a special centre-wide event to celebrate Book Week. Championed by their Events Coordinator, Matilda Tucker, the centre hosted over 100 guests at their Starry, Story Night.

“Our rooms were all set up for families to wander around in their pyjamas and read books. The Grand Performance, which included puppetry and storytelling, was done by our amazing and passionate Educator, Nira,” shares Centre Manager, Karen.

“We had pizza and hot chocolate to finish off a fabulous evening where everyone left with smiles on their faces.”

Guardian Early Learning Centre – Marrickville

As part of their transition to school program, Guardian Early Learning Centre – Marrickville have built a strong relationship with their local primary school, Ferncourt Public School. The team and preschoolers celebrated Book Week with a special visit.

“The school invited our preschoolers to join their Book Week Parade. It was a great experience for our preschoolers to be involved in our local community and our Educators loved dressing up too!” says Educator, Camille.

Paradise Early Learning Child Care Centre & Kindergarten

The kindy children at Paradise Early Learning Child Care Centre & Kindergarten got crafty this Book Week. They built their very own Truffula tree, inspired by reading The Lorax, which extended from the children’s interests in growing plants.

“The tree has grown so much over the past few weeks, and we are now in the painting stage. After listening to The Lorax, some of the children painted their own Loraxes, while others constructed Truffula trees made out of recycled and accessible materials,” shares Educator, Sonya‎.

Wallaby Street Early Learning Centre

Due to popular demand, the team at Wallaby Street Early Learning Centre created a The Very Hungry Caterpillar exploration for the birth-to-two room babies and toddlers to enjoy. The children made their very own hungry caterpillar fruit platter as well as hungry caterpillar grass heads.

“With so many children asking to read the book, we decided to set up an intentional environment to continue this interest. Through The Very Hungry Caterpillar learning environment, the children created their own imaginative play opportunities and explored numeracy concepts as they counted the fruit needed,” says Early Childhood Teacher, Kylie.

Some centres have already started planning their celebrations and events for next year, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with!
