After a tragic car accident in the neighbourhood, the children at Guardian Marsfield and their families began to have conversations about the incident and what road safety means. This prompted the centre to introduce Road Safety Week to the August calendar of events to help reinforce children’s understanding about road safety and to develop their knowledge and awareness of common road rules.

“During the week, educators came up with a variety of experiences that focussed on raising children’s awareness about road safety in different ways,” said Centre Manager Robert Shin. A great deal of planning and thought went into developing the experiences for the week and differed depending on the ages of the children.

In the Baby Room, children created their own hand made traffic lights using paper and coloured paints. While they were making the signs, children and educators engaged in discussions about the colours and what the red, orange and green symbolised. Outside, children had an opportunity to practise riding their bikes following different road signs that were drawn by the educators on the ground, they also practised crossing the street by looking at the traffic signs and working out whether to STOP, WAIT, or GO!

The children in the Toddler Room were very busy during Road Safety Week too. They spent the week making their own collaged traffic lights as well as green and red man signs. Toddlers adopted the role of drivers and pedestrians and interacted with each other based on their roles – there was a lot of beeping, laughing and learning from this interactive experience! During group time, the toddlers engaged in a discussion about car safety where they practised putting on seat belts and talked about the importance of keeping their seatbelt on while in the car to stay safe.

Over in the Preschool Room children engaged in talks about the various road signs around their community and discussed what they mean. To deepen their knowledge and familiarity, children worked with puzzles that featured road signs as well as playing with the vehicles at the centre’s transport table. After the discussions they had on road safety, the Preschoolers interacted with the vehicles and each other using the road rules they had previously talked about.

Heading outside, the Preschoolers practised how to walk across the road safely by looking carefully on both sides of the road. They also made their own traffic lights and drew different road signs on the ground so that they could follow while riding their bikes around. It was a collaborative, interactive and all round fun experience for the children in the Preschool Room.

Road Safety Week at Guardian Marsfield was a huge success with children gaining a deeper understanding of staying safe when in the car and on the road. They are planning on including this in their yearly calendar of events and we are looking forward to seeing what event they are planning next!
