In Conversation with Shannon Haulahan | Centre Manager of Richmond
4th July 2020
Shannon is the Centre Manager for Guardian Richmond – a light-filled Centre with two spacious outdoor areas, an art studio, vegetable gardens, a ‘tinker yard’, yoga program, and alfresco dining where children and families enjoyed shared meals prepared by an on-site chef. Shannon took a few minutes out of her busy day to share with us her story of career progression in the childcare sector.
Tell us a little about your time working in early childcare and education
I have worked in early childhood education for over 18 years – starting as an assistant, then room leader, 2IC and then manager. Starting in Queensland before I moved down to Melbourne.
What have you learnt about children during your career?
I have learnt that children are independent learners who learn best by exploring the world around them and asking questions around how, where and why
What is your fondest memory working in childcare?
Running into a child I taught years as an infant and toddler, years later when they were in high school and having them remember and reminisce with me about their time in my room. It made my heart swell.
Why did you choose to work for Guardian?
I wanted to work for a large Centre with new and different processes.
What excites/inspires you most about working with children and why?
Seeing them grow and develop over their time with us.
5 fun facts about you! (doesn’t have to be work related!)
- I’m from Queensland
- I’m a Pisces
- I’ve worked with all age groups
- My first car was a classic VW Beetle
- I have a three month old puppy named Bowie.
