Enriching Excursions at Elizabeth Street

At Elizabeth Street Early Learning Centre, we have a variety of programs in place to foster relationships with our families as well as a strong sense of belonging within the community. At the end of the day, there’s no better endorsement than having those families spread the word about our wonderful educators and how much their children love it here.

From the moment your child walks through the door, our nurturing, long-term educators go above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome. Rather than the standard one-day orientation, we offer two or three days to help new families and children become familiar with the centre. Among other initiatives, we invite our families to get involved with gardening projects, book reading and cultural cooking classes. This year, the children are excited to get our families involved in our menu planning sessions.

At Elizabeth Street Early Learning Centre, children are given limitless opportunities to explore a wide variety of environments, experiences and open-ended resources to facilitate them in following their natural curiosity to discover, think and learn.

Our delightfully unique outdoor wonderland offers great possibilities for discovery. We have a water pump and river bed which make for brilliant water play, a large undercover sandpit as well as tunnels and gardens to explore. Outdoor eating areas, big umbrellas for picnics and free space for bike and trike riding allow children to exercise and exert themselves in the fresh air. The children are encouraged to collect rainwater for our indoor plants and while they’re out there, they go wild for weather watching each day. As they watch, their natural sense of wonder at the world kicks in.

We’ve carried this love of nature and commitment to sustainability inside with plants and gardens adding a beautiful forest-like feel. Each of our warm, welcoming rooms is set up to cater to the learning and development of different age groups. We love to switch things up as the children’s interests evolve and develop.

Our educators go to great efforts in caring for the community and believe it’s important for children to grow up with compassion, empathy and understanding. Modelling these behaviours recently, they walked the walk by taking part in a Starlight Walkathon, in order to raise money for the Australian children’s charity. Together, our educators, families and children walked 342,800 steps in a two-hour trek from Bondi to Coogee Beach. Quite the sight to behold – there were 30 people in our group with toddlers, strollers, baby carriers and a sea of yellow Starlight balloons streaming out behind us.

On another occasion, a parent suggested the centre get involved in gathering blankets and food for homeless people around Sydney. In response, our enthusiastic team not only encouraged and contributed to donations, they also gave their time to help distribute the goods by hand. Thanks to the generosity of our families, the Elizabeth Street staff and the kindness of others, we had a solid collection of blankets, non-perishable food, bottled water and some warm dinner to hand out.

At Elizabeth Street Early Learning Centre, we believe initiatives such as our Starlight walkathon and food drives for homeless people allow us to connect with the community. This kind of outreach and involvement is vital and we’re proud to have such a caring and committed group of educators leading children in their educational journeys.
