Community Connection at Sherwood Forest Children’s Centre

What used to be a church has been transformed into a wonderful childcare centre in Brisbane. With a brand new, nature inspired outdoor space and plenty of space for children to play and learn, Sherwood Forest Children’s Centre has a real home away from home feel.

There’s a team of long standing educators at the centre – many of whom have been there for over ten years, including Director, Sue McGowan who has been at the centre for 23 years and the 2IC Tracey who has been there for 18 years. The longevity of the staff supports the community feel of the centre and creates a welcoming environment, which both parents and children love.

It’s all about culture and community

Exploring the local community and culture is a focus at Sherwood Forest Children’s Centre. Director, Sue McGowan says, “We have a very diverse team and families who contribute to the varying cultures of our centre.”

Each morning every room pays respect to our indigenous community by saying our Sherwood Forest “Acknowledgement to Country” with the children.

Recently, they celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year where one of their families came in to share their culture by bringing in a puppet lion and dragon. They also shared the traditional gift envelopes and used the interactive whiteboard to show some Chinese New Year activities. To round out the experience, children dressed up and painted lanterns – it was a great experience for all!

In terms of building relationships with businesses in the area, Sue says, “We have a strong connection with our local community.”

The children visit Sherwood Respite Centre five times a year, a local dental surgery, and Corinda Library and also invite a local optometrist to visit the Centre.

And the excursions don’t stop there. When having cooking experiences, the children walk to Woolworths (around the corner) to buy ingredients and also regularly visit a park at the end of our street. End of year celebrations for the Kindergarten class include an excursion by bus to see a stage play and picnic at the Botanical Gardens.

To continue that sense of community they have a P&F committee who fundraise and hold events throughout the year for the families to attend. Sue notes, “We continually receive wonderful comments and testimonials from families which empowers the management and staff and truly reflects the Early Years Learning Framework ‘being, belonging and becoming’ of the centre.”
